Getting to the Mine

The mine is located in the town of Wieliczka, about 10km from Krakow. The easiest ways to get there are by suburban train from Kraków Główny station to Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia (approx. 25-30 mins) or by public bus line 304 from Dworzec Główny Zachód (approx. 40 mins). Both stops are a short walk from the main Daniłowicz Shaft entrance.

The Descent & Tour

Your journey begins at the Daniłowicz Shaft, where you'll descend 380 wooden steps to the first level, 64 meters underground. The Tourist Route is a 3.5km walk through 20 historic chambers, past underground lakes, and among incredible salt sculptures. The tour takes about 2-3 hours and involves a total of 800 steps.

The Ascent & Facilities

After the guided portion of the tour concludes, you will ascend back to the surface in a modern, high-speed mining lift, which takes about 30 seconds. Underground, you will find souvenir shops, a restaurant called Karczma Górnicza, and restrooms at designated points. On the surface, the Bistro Posolone offers more dining options.

What to Wear and Bring

The temperature inside the mine remains a cool and constant 17-18°C year-round, so it's essential to dress appropriately. We recommend wearing layers, including a light jacket or sweater, to stay comfortable regardless of the season outside. The tour involves a significant amount of walking on salt-rock floors and descending hundreds of stairs, so comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are a must.

You are only permitted to bring a small carry-on bag with maximum dimensions of 35cm x 20cm x 20cm. Larger bags, backpacks, and strollers must be left in the luggage storage facility on the surface, which is available free of charge. Remember to bring a camera, but note that flash photography is not allowed in many areas to preserve the delicate salt carvings.

Where does the tour start?
The Tourist Route starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft, located at Daniłowicza 10, 32-020 Wieliczka. The Miners' Route starts at the nearby Regis Shaft.
Do I have to climb stairs?
Yes, the standard tour involves descending about 380 steps at the beginning and a total of 800 steps throughout the route. The return to the surface is by a high-speed lift.
Is there a place to store luggage?
Yes, there is a free luggage storage facility on the surface for bags larger than 35x20x20cm. Strollers can also be left here.
Are there restrooms underground?
Yes, toilets are available at two points along the Tourist Route. Your guide will point them out.
Is the tour suitable for people with claustrophobia?
While many chambers are vast, the tour does pass through some narrow corridors. Visitors with severe claustrophobia should consider this before booking.
Can I bring a stroller for my child?
Due to the large number of stairs, strollers are not practical on the tour. It is recommended to use a baby carrier or sling instead. Strollers can be left at the free luggage storage.
Is there food available in the mine?
